The History and Future of TeachQuest

TeachQuest continues to grow. It started as a love project to be used privately in a classroom as a substitute to for classcraft and grew into a community inspired project dedicated to providing a great experience for teachers and students

TeachQuest was released in closed beta back in October of 2024 after having been in development since the closure of Classcraft.

Our mission was simple, create an experience for kids and teachers that will make them forget Classcraft ever existed.

TeachQuest is built from scratch, line by line, using no pre-built frameworks and very few external libraries. It is hand crafted to make sure there are no limitations in what we can achieve. TeachQuest is designed in a way that will allow it grow and expand to meet the ever changing needs of the world.

Back in October 2024, TeachQuest released with very limited extra activities, but at it's core has always included student progression, rewards and consequences (curses). Different characters and backgrounds to choose from (which the library continues to grow). It had a simple randomizer, a dice roller, and random encounters.

While we beta tested the product with the public, we began to get a lot of feedback as development continued on the product. The initial release was very graphically light as we just wanted to get the kids playing. We made adjustments to key systems as the months went on adjusting values and fixing the flow of the things, especially combat.

Now that the framework was in place for something special, development halted on the original release and the production of version 2.0 began, and finally after months and months of upgrades and development, on May 18, 2025, we released version 2.0 with tons of new features.

  • Raids (An upgraded version of Classcrafts boss battle) -- Allowed teachers to create custom questions and face off against epic monsters in a battle to the death!
  • Quests -- Allowed teachers to create questions that students would do on their own time for rewards.
  • A message board -- A way to communicate with teachers, students and parents combined.
  • Ability for students to cast spells themselves.
  • Classroom noise monitor
  • Timer / Stopwatch
  • Tons of graphical improvements to the system, like tons!

Now we were in business. This was the first release of a proper product and ended our "beta" stage. Over the next coming weeks, many bug fixes and improvements were made to the core system through the amazing feedback of the community. The truth is, without the feedback of the community, and the testing of our early adopters, TeachQuest would never have been able to become the powerhouse platform it is today.

We began to add new features and polish to the system including sounds effects and music, student analytics, the ability to add extra teachers to your classroom, the introduction of Awards and Potions, and the first version of the Talent System.

Now that we had a real product up and running and being tested by tons of teachers all over the world, we knew what the final product needed to be. So back to the grind it was.

From June 4, 2025, we stopped development of the TeachQuest 2.0 system and began the final workings of what would be TeachQuest today and only July 27th, we released the final version after a month of testing systems and features along with a huge new feature: Campaigns.

Now students weren't just doing quests, but they would travel a map completing different quests to earn a giant reward at the end.

TeachQuest is a full complete classcraft alternative. It was designed that way.

Now to the future. What do we have planned?

  • A new and improved talent/power up system.
  • Introduction of additional classes that accommodate different types of play styles.
  • Improving our existing systems and game flow.
  • And who knows what else we may brew up soon? Stay tuned to find out!

TeachQuest is currently free for everyone.
